In 2002, American boy band The Backstreet Boys broke up due to tensions within the group as well an uneasy relationship with Jive records. At this time, Jive had been preparing to record an a capella version of the Backstreet Boys' latest album, _Black and Blue_. Rather than giving up, Jive went ahead with the project by hastily compiling a new lineup for the band, which comprised none of the original members and consisted solely of Earwig Deluxe. The album was recorded in 2003, but Jive did not get a chance to release it before the original Backstreet Boys re-formed in 2004, deeming the recording unmarketable. The masters were quietly shelved for 16 years and gained legendary status as a lost recording, often considered "The Backstreet Boys' _Electric Nebraska_".

In 2019, the true-crime podcast _Capra egregious hircus_ inspired the re-opening of a serial goat theft case from the early 2000s, wherein one of the goats in question disappeared from the recording studio when and where the Backstreet Boys were recording this album. While the recording took place in a sound-proofed room separate from the action, and ultimately yielded no usable evidence, Sony Music (which now holds Jive's catalog) was forced to provide the album to criminal investigators, resulting in its entering the public domain as a court document.
